Dear Potlatch School District Patrons -
As has been done for upward of 30 years, the school board of trustees approved the use of the elementary school gym for the upcoming annual gun show held in conjunction with the Knights of Columbus breakfast. The gun show and breakfast are not sponsored by the school nor do we receive any profits. To many local residents, the use of school facilities is commonplace and expected since they are essentially paid for by annual tax levies. The gyms, multi-purpose room, kitchen facilities and library have been used over the years for many events that are not related to the school district including the gun show as well as memorial services, music and theater events, home-school and church activities, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, retirement parties, community group fundraisers, fundraisers for community members in need, Distinguished Young Woman program, the after-school program, 4-H meetings and non-school sponsored sporting events like Saturday morning basketball. In short, as a small, rural community, the elementary and high school facilities and specifically the gyms are the "event centers" of our community because they are the largest indoor gathering spaces available.
The greater Potlatch area is comprised of many people who own and use guns regularly for sport and hunting. Many in our community rely upon hunting to feed their families and as such, guns are part of the fabric of our town. The gun show and breakfast has been widely supported by local citizens as a community gathering and fundraiser for many years and without incident. Once again recent events have sadly caused a focus on gun issues on the national level. However, we believe this matter is a local issue to be discussed and determined by local patrons. Our practices will continue to reflect the values and needs of our local community. We invite local residents to contact the district office or any board trustee to express your comments (both positive and negative), concerns and position on the matter. We will take those into account when considering the use of school district facilities for non-school related functions (including the gun show) in the future. We welcome your input.
